Today I am writing about something that is near and dear to many Americans’ heart – free music. There is a company named Brilliant Technologies Corporation(BLLN.PK) that, through one of their divisions: LTDnetwork, Inc., has developed a free peer-to-peer (P2P) digital music site called Qtrax. You may be thinking, big whoop, Shawn Fanning (the creator of Napster) created free P2P music back around 2000. So what is the big difference? Qtrax is legal. That’s right. You read correctly. It is 100% free and legal. The RIAA will not beat down your door and arrest you for using Qtrax.
Your next query must be, if it is legal and free…the music must be from unknown artists and labels. This line of thought is completely wrong. Big labels like Universal, UMG, EMI, and Sony have already signed digital license deals with Qtrax. Some of the world’s leading digital distribution entities like Kontor and FineTunes have also entered into licensing deals with Qtrax. Qtrax has over 25,000,000 songs from various popular artists like the Foo Fighters, Lenny Kravitz, Alicia Keys, Wu-Tang Clan and many, many more. You can check their featured artists here.
The official description of Qtrax, taken from their website is as follows, ”Qtrax is the world’s first free and legal peer-to-peer (P2P) digital music site. Music lovers can discover new music and legally download full-length, high-quality versions of their favorite songs while compensating both the artists and the record labels through non-intrusive and relevant advertising. Qtrax has the unparalleled support of the major record labels and all of their respective publishing divisions.”
Entrepreneurs are always looking for the next best thing, something to add more value to their life, make their tasks more efficient, help them gain more time, and ways to increase their cash flow all while expressing their passions. Qtrax doesn’t fit the bill for all the aforementioned qualities…however, it does save entrepreneurs money, time and assists in relieving stress. Who knows, some of you may want to advertise with Qtrax and it very well may increase your cash flow.
You can download the beta (pre-release test) version of Qtrax here. For any of you Winamp users, you will be right at home. Qtrax is not a Winamp clone. But its controls, menus, and features are intuitively placed in a Winamp style manner. Any of you who download, register and try it out…we welcome you to share your comments, after this blog, of your experience with the software and free service.
* Qtrax has not enabled downloading of music as of this writing. The download buttons are in the application, but the function is not active quite yet. However, the ability is coming soon and you can register for notification on their main landing and country selection page.
